How to implement Segmented Media Protection
Segmented Media Protection (SMP) is a suite of security solutions that protects access to your media streams and provides confidentiality. SMP works to prevent unauthorized access, duplication, and theft of your valuable media streams.
The securities offered with SMP are implemented on-the-fly during content delivery when client requests are managed by your AMD property. SMP is comprised of the following securities:
- Token Authentication: Only end users that have been properly authenticated can access your streams. This is accomplished by generating, exchanging and verifying "shared secret" tokens between AMD and the end-user's player.
- Media Encryption (HLS Format Media, Only): This encrypts your content and provides secure access keys to end users. Ideally, you should also use Token Authentication to ensure these secure keys are only delivered to end users that have also been authenticated. This is an additional service that you can add to your contract. Contact your account representative for details.
Segmented Media Protection is recommended
SMP is a recommended behavior, and it is automatically included in the Default Rule in your AMD property. This rule applies to all of your content. You can remove it from the Default Rule and include it in a custom rule to restrict it to specific URL paths, filenames, or other relevant conditions.
You can also remove it from your property altogether if you don't want this protection in your AMD property. (However, we recommend against this.)
