Integrating AppDynamics as an External Data Source

The AppDynamics application performance management (APM) system can be configured as an external data source for performance intelligence within CloudTest, TouchTest, or mPulse.

Once configured, an external data source appears in the Dashboards, Widget Type list as a separate external data node. AppDynamics widgets can be added to dashboards alongside other dashboard widgets. The CloudTest dashboards present aggregate data at any capacity supported by the user’s AppDynamics credentials.

External data charts from AppDynamics are presented in real-time, like any other charts, and can be viewed from a point in time, such as the time frame of a result, or a specific relative or absolute time range.

Integrating with AppDynamics

In order to access AppDynamics data from CloudTest, TouchTest, or mPulse, you must be able to access the AppDynamics Controller directly.

  1. Navigate to Central > External Data Sources.

  1. Click New.The External Data Sources dialog box appears.

  2. Enter an External Data Source name.

Optionally, specify a folder location and description.

    1. Select AppDynamics in the Type drop-down.

    2. Determine whether to connect directly or use the CloudTest Conductor as the connection method. As with Monitor Servers, a direct connection is used whenever possible, and Conductor can be used in cases where the server is behind a firewall.

    3. Provide the AppDynamics Controller URL. Use the port number, if required.Note that the AppDynamics port in use is typically port 8090. If necessary, use this port in the URL field of the New External Data Source dialog box. For example,

    4. Enter the AppDynamics’ username and password for the given server.

    5. Use Test Connection to verify that the connection is successful and then click OK.

The configured AppDynamics server is added to the External Data Sources list in Central. Additionally, External Data appears as a new entry in the Check Server tree alongside other CloudTest services. Check Server(s) is viewed from within the Central > Servers and Server Instances lists using the lower panel Check Server(s) tab. When check server is run, the External Data Source is checked along with all the others.
