About Fast Purge and ECCU

Both Fast Purge and ECCU need to propagate refresh instructions through the edge network. For Fast Purge this normally takes about 5 seconds. For ECCU the normal time is 20–40 minutes; ECCU takes longer because it has to execute a more complex set of instructions.

The differences between the mechanisms, at the basic level, are:
  • Fast Purge provides for removing and refreshing specific objects, for example, as specified by URL or ARL or all objects under a CP code, using removal-based or invalidation-based refresh. Fast Purge can handle many thousands of requests per day.
  • ECCU provides for invalidation-based refresh by rules such as date/time, path, and extension. More complex criteria can be specified to provide for invalidation by additional criteria such as request header, request method or protocol.
