What domain name should I use in NetStorage?

Each access method has a unique upload domain for accessing NetStorage.

Once you've determined an applicable domain name prefix, you'll use it with all domain names for a storage group. (That is, after the storage group completes its creation.) Each domain name allows you to access the group using the upload account access methods available.

Domain Name Usage Upload Account "Access Method"
<Domain name prefix>.upload.akamai.com This is the default domain name used to access a storage group. Usage defaults to FTP. While it can be used, it is not recommended, because it may not consistently and reliably work for all protocols. As a best practice, use the operational domain name specific to your selected access method. All (but not recommended)
<Domain name prefix>.ftp.upload.akamai.com This domain name is used to access the Storage Group for upload if you are using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). FTP
<Domain name prefix>.rsync.upload.akamai.com This domain name is used to access the Storage Group for upload if you are using the Rsync protocol. It applies to both non-secure (Rsync with Password) and secure (connection via SSH Key) access. Rsync (non-secure) or SSH and Aspera (secure)
<Domain name prefix>.scp.upload.akamai.com This domain name is used to access the Storage Group for upload if you are using the Secure Copy Protocol (SCP). SSH or SCP
<Domain name prefix>.sftp.upload.akamai.com This domain name is used to access the Storage Group for upload if you are using the Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP). SFTP
<Domain name prefix>.ssh.upload.akamai.com This domain name is used to access the Storage Group for upload if you are using the NetStorage CMShell. CMShell
<Domain name prefix>-nsu.akamaihd.net This domain name is used to access the Storage Group via the NetStorage Usage API. NetStorage HTTP API
<Domain name prefix>.aspera.upload.akamai.com This domain name is used to access the Storage Group for upload if you are using Aspera Upload Acceleration. Aspera

The list that follows reveals a few examples of domain names if you have established mydomain as your domain name prefix:

  • Upload Using Rsync: mydomain.rsync.upload.akamai.com
  • Upload Using SFTP: mydomain.sftp.upload.akamai.com
  • Access the NetStorage Usage API: mydomain-nsu.akamaihd.net

Access methods must be enabled in an Upload Account

For reference purposes, a storage group displays domain names for all of the access methods available for use. However, you are limited to the access methods currently enabled in the upload account you are using to access the storage group. For example, if you have enabled FTP and the NetStorage Usage API as access methods for your upload account, only the <domain name prefix>.FTP.upload.akamai.com, <domain name prefix>.upload.akamai.com and <domain name>-nsu.akamaihd.net would apply for use.

Ensure that the upload account you add for use is configured to support all applicable access methods. Consult the Upload Account "Access Methods" column in the table above for specifics on the appropriate one.
