Check the first mile connectivity

The first mile refers to the connection between an edge server and the origin server.

How to

  1. Use the Test Network Connectivity (MTR) tool and use the origin server IP as a Destination IP or domain name.
    ResultAction
    The tool fails to resolve the hostname. Go to the next step.
    There is a loss or latency within the origin server’s network. Escalate to the origin server’s hosting provider.
    There is a loss or latency within the network between the Akamai edge server and the customer’s origin server. Contact Akamai Customer Care. Akamai will notify the appropriate ISP that a problem exists.
  2. Do a DNS query from an Akamai edge server with the origin server hostname as a Hostname or domain name using the Get Domain Details (DIG) tool. Save all the authoritative server details.
  3. Do a trace-route to each of the authoritative servers from step 2 using the Test Network Connectivity (MTR) tool.
    ResultAction
    At least one authoritative name server is unreachable. Escalate to the DNS provider of the origin server owner.
    There is a loss or latency within the authoritative name server’s network. Escalate to the origin server’s hosting provider.
    There is loss or latency within the network between the Akamai edge server and the authoritative name server. Contact Akamai Customer Care. Akamai will notify the appropriate ISP that a problem exists.
